Audio Book Training Opportunities
Want to learn more about the MyiLibrary Audio Books platform? The State Library of North Carolina is offering the following training opportunities:
Registration is now open for two online workshops, April 6 & 8th, about NC LIVE's new downloadable audio book collection.
To provide broadest access to staff, registration is limited to one seat per library system; broadcasting the session in a conference room or computer lab to multiple staff members is encouraged. Check the events calendar http://host6.evanced.info/ncarolina/evanced/eventcalendar.asp for more details and registration.
Audio Books Pilot Program
Before going live with the collection, NC LIVE selected a group of libraries to pilot the new eAudio books, including AMY Regional Library, Blue Ridge Community College, Lenoir-Rhyne University, North Carolina Wesleyan University, Pender County Public Library, Wake Technical Community College, Western Carolina University, and Winston-Salem State University. Many of these 8 libraries have already begun offering the new audio books to their patrons.

On Friday, March 12th, NC LIVE released 24 new PBS titles, along with its new Video Collection interface. The new videos include Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey, Mansfield Park, and Persuasion, Ken Burns's The War, Dickens's Oliver Twist, Shakespeare's King Lear, and more! View the Complete List of new videos.
NC LIVE released the new videos and Video Collection interface as part of the Teen Tech Week celebration, a national library initiative that runs during the 2nd week of March, designed to get teens to use libraries. The new videos are available from NC LIVE's Video Collection website. This collection of more than 400 videos can be streamed online, and is a great tool for teachers to grab visual learners' interest. All NC public k-12 schools can stream these videos in their classrooms without a password!
MARC Records
MARC Records for the new PBS Videos are not yet available. Once they are available, we will post them on our website and send a message to the list.
Let your patrons know about it! - Press Release Template
Don't forget to let your community know about these new videos. Use our press release template to tell your local media: http://new.nclive.org/sites/default/files/TTW_PBS_pressrelease%20template.doc
Please feel free to modify and adapt the press release as needed!
Teen Tech Week is a perfect opportunity to entice teens to start using the library. ALA's Teen Tech Week website provides a number of great ideas and publicity tools for getting teens into the library, including sample press release templates, letters to the editor, PSA's and logos you can download.
In her post about Teen Tech Week featured in In the Library with the Leadpipe, Robyn E. Vittek, the Assistant Youth Services Coordinator for Akron-Summit County Public Library reminds us that "Although teens are familiar with the internet and internet-based gadgets (usually before we are) and feel comfortable using them, they don't always use them to their best advantage. The Pew Internet and American Life Project reports that 71% of teens use the internet as their primary source for school projects, but many of those same students need guidance in using the internet effectively. By promoting Teen Tech Week, you're helping to let teens know that the librarians at your facility are information experts - dynamic, interested, up-to-date adults that they can turn to for help with their information needs, and not just encyclopedia pushers."
One way to celebrate Teen Tech Week in North Carolina this March, is to let teens and teachers know about NC LIVE's PBS Video collection. This collection of more than 400 videos can be streamed online, and is a great tool for teachers to grab visual learners' interest. All NC public k-12 schools can stream these videos in their classrooms without a password!
In March, NC LIVE will add 24 new titles to our current NC LIVE Video Collection, including Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey, Mansfield Park, and Persuasion, Ken Burns's The War, Oliver Twist, King Lear, and more!
In March we'll also be giving the NC LIVE Video Collection website a facelift to give it a more modern look and feel. More information about the new NC LIVE Video Collection website and PBS videos coming soon!
